About

Geoff DeafGeoff Herbert

Hi — yes, I’m really deaf. And my name is Geoff. I was born with a profound binaural hearing loss and I hear about 10% as well as the average person. However, with hearing aids, lipreading, context, and visual cues people often forget that I’m really hard of hearing.

I’m an Entertainment Reporter and SEO Lead for Syracuse Media Group, the home of syracuse.com and The Post-Standard newspaper. I write primarily about hot topics, movies, music, local events, celebrity gossip, technology, web trends and Central New York life; I also do search engine optimization for the website and its reporters.

I also work as a disc jockey and DJ parties, dances, weddings, clubs, bar mitzvahs, sporting events, and more. If interested in booking me to DJ your event, email me.

I previously worked for two and a half years as an Associate Producer at syracuse.com and five years as a web coordinator for Clear Channel. My responsibilities included managing social media, search engine optimization (SEO), web development, graphic design, video and online marketing. I also still do freelance work in web design, social media and SEO consulting.

I graduated from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in 2005 with a major in TV/Radio/Film and a minor in Music Industry. My radio career includes six years as morning show producer for the #1 (18-34 demographic) morning show “Marty and Shannon In The Morning” at HOT 107.9 (WWHT-FM Syracuse), plus work as general manager of Z89 (WJPZ-FM) in Syracuse, New York; general manager of WHAB-FM in Acton, Massachusetts; and internships with Kiss 108 (WXKS-FM) and WAAF 107.3 (WAAF-FM) in Boston. I also have experience in artist management, promotions and concert booking.

I’ve helped out with several charities including the American Red Cross, Disability Mentoring Day, St. Baldrick’s Foundation and AIDS Community Resources. In addition to serving on the WJPZ Board of Directors, I’m always happy to speak to students in local schools, give advice and be a role model both as a professional in my field and as an individual who’s overcome a disability to succeed in life. I received a Syracuse 40 Under 40 Award in 2009.

In my spare time, I go to concerts, dig for new music, read about technology and trends, watch movies, cheer for my favorite sports teams (Syracuse basketball and football, Boston Celtics, New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox) and spend time with my wife and daughters.

As always, this is your friendly neighborhood DeafGeoff saying “Turn it up. Go Deaf.”
